When was sure start established

The study argues that because returning funding levels to the peak may be difficult, new investment should be focused on providing Sure Start services in neighbourhoods with the highest levels of child poverty, on the grounds that they would be more likely to benefit from them.

There was also evidence the programme delivered significant financial savings to the NHS. The study found no evidence that Sure Start helped reduce child obesity among five-year-olds or improved maternal mental health, although it added that data limitations should not be taken as evidence that there was no effect in reality. A key objective of Sure Start was to provide specialist heath services to parents, such as baby-weighing clinics, alongside more general health advice and parenting support, childcare and employment advice.

Up to now proponents have struggled to back up public support for the policy with clear evidence of its effectiveness. She thinks he seems better developed than other children she knows who don't use a children's centre. But with prospects for the years ahead remaining uncertain, it is seeking to add to its hugely popular nursery places to increase its sustainability. At Pen Green's attached research and teaching base, data collection is such a specialty that it offers courses on evaluating reach and effectiveness to other children's centres.

Pen Green will also lead a project with 16 other centres in England to set up a network of early-years teaching centres. At a time like this you've got to try to build capacity and be sustainable. Living under the threat of being cut all the time is incredibly counterproductive and incapacitating. Asking if Sure Start worked is the easy question but the wrong one, Eisenstadt says. The right question is: what has it shown about the best ways to improve the life chances of young children?

The answer is: high-quality early education. The work will inevitably stall in the short term, she predicts. We still have a quilt, but with almost no gaps, and some of the patches are beautiful.

Children's centres to offer increased childcare and be open to families from wider geographic areas. Sure Start Unit merged in Whitehall with early years and childcare programmes. Third evaluation shows improvements for mothers and families, but lesser gains for children. Social care. The evolution of Sure Start: the challenges and the successes.

In a candid new book the first director of the Sure Start unit reveals the behind-the-scenes story of the early-years scheme — but has the programme been a success and what does the future hold?

This report takes the outcomes for 5-year-old children and their families reported in the National Evaluation of Sure Start, and estimates economic values for some of those outcomes. They were aimed at families with children up to the age of 4 living in disadvantaged areas.

The aim was to bring together early education, childcare, health services and family support to promote the physical, intellectual and social development of babies and children. This report discusses the economic issues arising out of the evaluation of the impact of Sure Start local programmes in England. It takes the outcomes for children and families at the age of five years reported in the National Evaluation of Sure Start and where possible estimates economic values for those outcomes.

Where a direct estimation of economic value is not possible at this stage, probable sources of future economic values are discussed.
