JT starts it. JT finishes it! The World All Stars finally got on the scoreboard through a barging run from winger David Mead after yet another bunker video referee howler. Mead was awarded a try despite clearly being held up short of the try line before being pushed back by Indigenous All Star defenders. The video replays also showed a clear lack of camera angles available to the men making the decision in the Redfern bunker.
The World All Stars grabbed a second try through Nene McDonald in the 39th minute to cut the margin at half time to Game on! Ashley Taylor extended the Indigenous All Stars lead to after just 13 minutes when he combined for a daring give and go with halves partner Johnathan Thurston.
After Taylor ran around the touchline and passed inside to Thurston, the Cowboys superstar danced around before passing back to Taylor who was able to sprint down the paint and score 10m to the right of the posts. Bird was on the end of a sweet linebreak from Joel Thompson before crashing over the try-line as three World All Stars players smashed into him from all angles.
Two minutes later they were in again when Blake Ferguson found himself on the wing with a huge overlap on the right edge. Ferguson was able to comfortably stroll over the try-line out wide and give his team a lead after just seven minutes. NRL pic. The Indigenous All Stars began the dance standing in a circle on their own 30m line before marching up towards the World All Stars on the halfway line, led by Inglis.
Bracey, a former Sky News presenter and Foxtel ambassador, is stepping into the role vacated by popular presenter Yvonne Sampson, who switched to rival rugby league broadcaster Fox Sports in the off-season. James Bracey leading the commentary team for Rugby League! You didnt learn with Michael Slater? The match is seen as a pre-season primer and celebration of indigenous culture however Meninga says that representative spots are up for grabs and the match is a golden chance to make a good impression. While the trans-Tasman Test and State of Origin are still months away, Meninga said he and NSW and Indigenous coach Laurie Daley will use it as a gauge as to how his players perform up against some of the best in the business.
Tonight he partners Johnathan Thurston in the halves. The rest of the team will be inclined to pick Bevan French and Latrell Mitchell on each wing but I've gone for age over beauty. The list goes on. Have we ever seen such incredible Indigenous talent coming through at the same time?
Such is their potential that proven performers like Blake Ferguson, Dane Gagai and Alex Johnston can't even get a start in my team. All have spoken about how much they enjoy giving back to the game, and this is an experience that will stay with them forever.
A week in camp with Johnathan Thurston, Greg Inglis and co will take their games to scary levels. With such incredible talent available to choose from, it was hard to leave some players out. The forwards are relatively settled, but the competition for places across the backline is fierce. Kangaroos winger Blake Ferguson gets the nod on one flank, with Queensland rep Dane Gagai the other winger.
I've also opted to include Jack Bird and Jack Wighton on the bench, with the former able to cover the majority of the backline and lock. Whichever way this All Stars team lines up, it's going to be a pretty slick side isn't it? The forward pack is traditionally seen as the weakness for the Indigenous side compared with the NRL All Stars but there is serious quality available up front with the likes of Ryan James, Andrew FIfita, Sam Thaiday and Wade Graham, while my backline features rookie sensations Latrell Mitchell and Ash Taylor teaming up with five rep stars.
There's plenty of impact off the bench with quality ball-runners Jack Bird, Tyrone Peachey and the lightning quick James Roberts while Tyrone Roberts is there as cover for the hooker and halves spots. Season Highlights.
