These days, he can rattle off the celebrities that have gently poked fun at the site and its advertisements from Ellen Degeneres to Carrie Underwood to Carmelo Anthony.
Miller, who works in agricultural marketing, got the idea to start the dating service when he kept meeting lonely farmers through his work. Living in a rural area where the nearest neighbor is miles away and everyone knows each other does not leave a lot of dating options.
Suburban sprawl has wiped out a lot of small farms near urban centers, Miller explains, leaving fewer farms and farmers in the US. It is also the rural lifestyle. One of the original farmers who inspired Miller to start the site told him she tried regular online dating, but when prospective suitors would invite her to coffee at 9pm, she would have to explain that she needed to go to bed around that time so she could be up early to feed the animals, and the potential relationships would fizzle before they began.
From the first Founding Farmers restaurant, the group has grown to seven locations. In addition to his work with Farmers, Simons is the mind behind Our Last Straw, a nonprofit coalition of Greater Washington hotels, restaurants and businesses dedicated to eliminating single-use plastic straws. What is your biggest lesson learned? When our first restaurant failed, it was incredibly difficult. Neither Mike nor I has ever had a big, spectacular failure like that. Has the restaurant made any changes to internal wages policies in light of the lawsuit settlement in ?
The most important lesson is to understand that culture is not a replacement for human resources. What would you say is the biggest misconception about the hospitality industry? What's the best business advice you've received? Slow down, shut up and listen. Our booze? That too.
Our award-winning spirits use all American ingredients harvested by American farmers. Originally created for our restaurant craft cocktails, our spirits are available to enjoy at home, including Founding Spirits Dry Gin, Vodka, and American Amaro. We give a great deal of thought to the farmers who grow and harvest our ingredients. We seek out family farmers and support purveyors who employ responsible farming methods. This includes farms that value and support conservation, biodiversity, animal stewardship, economic viability, and fair treatment of workers.
We work to buy directly from farmers, including running our own wheeler directly from American family farms and suppliers in North Dakota, picking up food and supplies along the way to Washington, D.
Mike V. Whenever possible, we get our supplies from a cadre of primarily independent and locally owned distributors, who source from nearby family farms and fishermen, that are able to carry the products we need, keep up with our volume, and align with our mission. Our goal — directly and indirectly — is to increase demand for family-farmed products while pioneering a business model that gives farmers a greater share of the food dollar.
The purpose of our company is two-fold. Second, to do it on a platform of a sustainable, scalable, and earth-friendly business model, generating profits for farmers in ways we can be proud. Founding Farmers is majority owned by American family farmers, including the 47, farmers of the North Dakota Farmers Union. Our restaurants operate, and are guided by, a very simple principal: we see and share everything … Through The Eyes Of The Farmer.
For over a decade we have stayed true to our mission. We never prioritize profit above mission. We maintain our principles and our values. Just like our farmer owners, we are in it for the long haul, bringing a multi-generational approach to each unique project and growing sustainably. This is our company character.
We take great pride in the fact that all of our restaurants are certified by the Green Restaurant Association and that we are committed to continually seek new and innovative ways to improve and increase our sustainability efforts.
Most importantly, our prices are affordable and our doors are open to all! Founding Farmers DC. Founding Farmers Tysons.
